Nica Time- Take 2

I’ve been lucky so far. Everyday I get to the health center at 8:00 am, punto, and Don Enrique is already there. On Tuesdays at 2:00 pm I meet with a group of bridagistas at the Red Cross. They are always there on time, mรกs o menos. Thursdays my class starts promptly at 8:30, all of my students present. I would say I don’t encounter Nica time often, if at all.

Until today. I’ve been working on organizing a youth group. Some 40 jovenes from a local high school all signed up to be in a sexual and reproductive health club. It seemed obvious enough; they don’t get to talk about sex anywhere else. We were supposed to meet this morning, 9:30 am, Casa de Adolescentes. So I got there at 9:15 am being the diligent white girl that I am. 9:30 rolled by, 9:45 . . . 10:00, 10:15 and I’m still waiting. Eventually two girls showed up to inform me that no one was coming. High school is held every afternoon, so all of the students work in the morning. I guess I should have known. Looks like I’m rescheduling. Maybe it will work out next time?

Side note: Although my first youth group didn’t work I’m in a fabulous mood today. I’m out of my Peace Corps funk, it’s raining outside and smells like ozone and I went on a date with another Peace Corps Volunteer. Check me out.

Health Fair in Mancotal

Personal hygiene talk to the school. Probably talking about diarrhea or parasites.

A very cool game I created. Throw a ball, answer a question if you get it through a hole. I was a little surprised the kids loved it so much.
